WTF? (What THE? Fridays) Part 10

Hopefully continuing collection of pictures of things in Thailand that make me scratch my head, chuckle, or just generally go–HUH?

Because everybody else has a Wordless Wednesday or TMI Tuesday, or whatever, and I want one, too.

Okay, it's a "cooking utensil", but what in the HELL do you use it for? Seriously, it looks like a medieval torture device.**Insert clever joke about medieval torture devices being like...something...here.**

BEST NAME EVER FOR A FOOT FETISH STORE. Instead, I think it's either an intentional rip-off of Foot Locker or they just took over the store and changed one letter. Photo by BF Jason.

Good ol' Ronald McD. I know for people in Thailand this isn't anything interesting, but I thought it was the amusing the first time I saw it, so I thought folks back home might be interested in it, too. Although I wish his name were Woraporn McDonald, or something. That would be much better.

Am I being culturally insensitive to the extreme by posting this? I mean, I can't even figure out what it's supposed to be...and since I am illiterate in Thai, I can't even read what it actually says. This has got to be an advertisement against illiteracy if ever there was one.

Friday update:

Ummm…I have a three-day weekend, thank the lord. And I bought an ice cream cake yesterday. It was okay, but they included dry ice in the package to take home, and dropping that into a cup of water was pretty effing entertaining. That about sums up the week.

  1. Nice post! This place definitely has its share of WTF’s… I think the first picture is a can opener. The third photo of the men says “ปากเป็ดทอด” or “Fried Duck’s Bill” or “Fried Duck’s Mouth”. It looks as if they spelled “mouse” instead of “mouth”. Its never a dull moment living here in Thailand. – Cheers!

    • Thanks, Michael…that makes sense. Apparently I know nothing about Thailand. But “mouth” vs. “mouse”–that’s funny!

Beautiful photos on your site, by the way, holy cow!

  2. Woraporn McDonald? TOUCHE!

  3. Di

The top thing is a can opener – or at least for piercing holes in tins of condensed milk.

And the “mouse duckling” should read “deep fried duck beaks”. I’ve always wondered about that dish – what is there to eat on a duck’s beak? Mostly batter, I imagine.

    HI MEGAN,

THE UTENSIL IS A CAN/BOTTLE OPENER THE RIGHT SIDE IS A CAP OPENER THE MIDDLE TINE IS FOR PUNCHING SMALL HOLES ON TOP OF CAN (THINK MILK CAN FOR ROTI) THE LEFT SIDE IS FOR REMOVING TOP OF THE CAN.

FRY DUCK YOU ASK? LITERAL TRANSLATION IS FRY DUCK’S BEAK, IT’S FRY DUCK TONGUE.

    HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

Have a great weekend! And I’m just happy that can opener doesn’t come in an electrical version…

  7. I guess I am getting old…We had a few of those can openers around the house when I was young.

  8. I had one of those torture devices, Bl**dy dangerous and have since replaced with more sensible bottle opener and can opener.

I have given up on making fun out of bad English until I can speak and write fluent Thai. Mind you, I really should take a photo of the restaurant near my work that advertises Breakfart on the sign outside.

    • Yeah, that’s why I was wondering if it was insensitive for me to post it, but…it was funny, and I really did want to know what it meant!

I had one of those manual can openers, as well, and finally bought the kind I was used to back home. It was worth it because I could never open my cans with the other one!

Just don’t try to get a plane with that can opener!

  10. Haha that does look a bit like a torture device. I’ve always found Ronald creepy but he looks a bit more friendly in that pose.
