This week’s WTF? is not so much a WTF?, unless you are my parents and you are continually amazed that other parts of the world have Christmas stuff, as well. To be fair, I’m kind of amused myself that there are so many Christmas decorations and so much Christmas music around Thailand. One of my Thai friends said it’s because Thais love any excuse to have fun and have a party.
So, I’m just going to post a (very) few pictures of a Thai Christmas…
AND THE BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER…
Christmas Eve plans include traditional Christmas Eve burritos and many margaritas with the lovely Dani and Melanie and their respective others. Christmas dinner will be spent with Melanie and her respective other, eating homemade apple pie. Be jealous, suckers. Melanie has an oven!
I’m not quite missing Christmas yet because it feels so much like summer here still. If I were in a cold, Christian country, I might feel a little different. But as I’m currently in a hot Buddhist country sitting in my underwear and sweating like crazy, I’m kind of forgetting I’m supposed to be all bundled up in a blanket, sitting with my family and watching 24 hours of A Christmas Story while stuffing myself silly with delicious food…ahhhh….
And one more Christmas Bunny picture…
Merry Christmas to my friends and family! I miss you all!
Merry Christmas, Megan!! If I could get those chips on the West Coast, I would ship more to you. We have lame, bean-based healthy chips here that only hamsters would love. :)
Merry Christmas, Jess! Thanks for the thought…bean-based chips don’t sound quite as delicious!
Merry Christmas, Megan! We miss you!
Thanks, Carrie! Miss you guys, too!
Merry Christmas Megan…the whole bunny thing is very confusing…like Christmas morphed with Easter and Alice In Wonderland. It must be a Bangkok thing ;) Nice that Thailand tries to accommodate us farang though!
It’s so true!
Merry Christmas to you guys up there, too !
What?? We didn’t have any Christmas Bunnies in Chiang Mai. I feel ROBBED!
Aww…you should visit BKK! We have all sorts of good stuff down here!
Sally, I didn’t see any, perhaps those Christmas elephants scared them off!
Hahaha! Yup, Christmas bunnies and Christmas elephants…Christmas in the tropics.
OMG! And other expressions of surprise! I was actually there (several times) in the past week. At one time, I sat in the Japanese restaurant in Siam Thingy (Not the Paragon which is the department store, nor Siam Discovery, but the one in the middle between the two, whose name I just blanked.) As I munched my festive Chicken Teriyaki, I gazed out on the very spot where you were standing for your photos with the bunny.
I am not a stalker. Honest.
OK, maybe I am, but I’m not stalking you. My computer was being repaired in Siam Discovery, and I passed through the Centre BTS station, wandered round the Siam Centre, loadsa times.
You should have seen these lights at night – they were pretty damn good.
I hope you have / had / have had the best Christmas, and Santa made all you and your dreams come true.
Hmmm…I’m not sure about this stalker business.
Although, you know what? If I had a stalker, I might feel like a real celebrity. Ever see 30 Rock? I could be like Jenna!
Anyway, yeah, I saw the lights at night, too, and they *were* pretty great.
I had a great Christmas, actually, thanks. I hope you did, too!
So I am curious….why the Christmas Bunny? Have you heard any explanation about their reasoning for this odd decoration? I wonder if Santa will show up for Easter? :)
Side note – thanks so much for writing this blog! It kind of feels like we get to go on this adventure with you :)
I really have no idea about why a Christmas Bunny. I’ve seen Santa around, too. Usually somebody pipes up with an explanation, but I haven’t seen one yet.
Awwww…thanks for saying such nice things! I’m glad you enjoy reading it. That makes me happy! :) Hope you guys are well down in FL!
looks like you had a happy christmas! sending you lots of love and hugs!
Happy Christmas to you! Lots of love!
Hi Megan,
I have a feeling Bangkok was/is overrun with Christmas Bunnies because this next Chinese New Year is the year of the rabbit…
Just started reading your blog, and thank you so much for cracking me up – I’m a teacher too and as you can imagine I’m in need of the laughs while I count down my days until June and leaping off into unpaid unemployed freedom.
Amy in Taiwan (you should see the rabbit paraphernalia here! ;)
Hi Amy! Hooray for unpaid unemployed freedom!
I actually just realized a couple of days ago the same thing about the Christmas Bunnies. But it took me almost two months to puzzle it out–you’re clearly much smarter than I am! :)
